Talkin Tarn Country Park

Sightseeing attraction | Brampton | England | United Kingdom

The Talkin Tarn Country Park is located approximately 14 kilometers east of Carlisle and about three kilometers south of Brampton in the county of Cumbria, England. The centerpiece of the park is Talkin Tarn, a 26-hectare glacial lake that was formed around 10,000 years ago by the power of retreating glaciers. The term "Tarn" comes from the Old Norse "tjǫrn" and means "small lake".

The park covers a total of 50 hectares and offers a variety of leisure activities. An approximately two-kilometer circular path around the lake is perfect for leisurely walks and is also suitable for wheelchair users and families with strollers. The surrounding forests and meadows are home to a rich flora and fauna, including robins, woodpeckers, and occasionally even otters.

Water sports enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy: the lake is great for rowing, sailing, and fishing. The Talkin Tarn Amateur Rowing Club, founded in 1859, is one of the oldest rowing clubs in Northern England and regularly hosts regattas and training sessions.

For dining, the Boathouse Tea Room, located directly on the lake shore, offers a picturesque view of the Tarn from its terrace. Additionally, there is a visitor center in the park with rotating exhibitions about the history and nature of the region.

The Talkin Tarn Country Park is open year-round and offers unique experiences in every season. Whether for nature lovers, sports enthusiasts, or families, the park is an ideal destination in the Cumbria region.

I adore Talkin Tarn Park. We had a delightful latte in the welcoming cafe. It's a shame the larger cafe is no longer open. More indoor seating would be an improvement.

A wonderful place for a peaceful walk in nature. The on-site car park is convenient, with reasonable charges and various payment methods available. The cafe and toilets have specific opening hours. Accessibility is good, with free parking available for 3 hours. Many walking and running options are offered, including accessible routes. The park hosts a variety of activities throughout the year. The bird hide and sculptures are worth exploring.

During autumn and winter, we visit Talkin Tarn for a walk around the lake to avoid midges. The path is well laid out with light forestry and abundant wildlife. The cafe is charming and boating is available. It's an excellent spot for a leisurely stroll after a meal or with pets or children.

Definitely worth a visit. Enjoy a nice short walk around the lake followed by good coffee. There's also a nice playground for young children.

For a lovely circular walk in beautiful surroundings with abundant wildlife, including birds, squirrels, deer, and swans, this is the perfect spot. The walk is level, wheelchair accessible, and offers an excellent tearoom, children's play park, and public toilets.

Fantastic outdoor location with a pleasant walk around the lake and opportunities to walk to nearby villages. The shop offers lovely souvenirs and duck food, and the cafe serves delicious food and cakes with excellent service. There's a nice play area for kids and a small woodland walk.

Enjoyable walk around the lake with plenty of seating available. The large car park accepts cash or contactless payments. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Explored part of the wooded trail as an alternative to walking around the lake, which was pleasant. However, I noticed a lack of bins on the way back to the car park, which was disappointing given the high traffic in the area.

The place is beautiful, but my fishing attempts were unsuccessful. Perhaps it's just not the right time of year.

Despite the windy day, the sun appeared and we enjoyed a lovely walk around the Tarn with our French bulldog, meeting many other friendly people and their dogs.

The lady in the ice cream shop was grumpy, and the picnic area was busy with too many dogs for my preference.
